The spring of 2011 has been known as being a string with some strong abilities to create plenty of rain and dangerous and sometimes deadly storms that have ravaged through many parts of the midwest and down south, and to the eastern parts of the country. One state, in particular, though who has welcomed this spring that has been full of rain is Massachusetts.

Last summer, Massachusetts had to deal with a severe lack of rain that cause drought to many portions of the state. This year, though, there has been great improvment in comparisson to the drought emergencies of last year. So far in the month of May 2011. Massachusetts has experienced percipitation that is slighltly below normal, but this level is a drastic improvement over some of the more serious droughts of last year at the same time. On top of having better than last year rainfall, most waterways were generally slightly above normal so that means that valuable streams and reservoirs are not in danger of going dry.

In early July, parts of Massachusetts, much like other parts of the country, suffered through severe and sometime damaging tornado and thunderstorms. On June 1 alone, there were a reported 3 tornados that touched down and caused dramatic destruction and 3 people died while hundreds were injured during these horrible storms.

But as of now, the drought condition for Massachusetts is a least normal or above normal in many areas of the state. Northeast, Southeast, and Central Massachusetts all report normal conditions, while the Connecticut River and Western Massachuesetts all report above average conditions. This just mean that most places are safe from the risk of drought as least for now, thanks to the somewhat wet and rainy summer that most of the country has gone through. If you live in Massachuesettes, rest assured that droughtwise, this summer will be better than last summer.
